3 Common iPhone 4 Problems (And How To Fix Them)

Posted on 13th Nov 2011 @ 11:49 AM

The iPhone 4 is a great piece of technology, but it's not without its faults.  People have been complaining about a number of common iPhone 4 problems, many of which have quick, simple solutions that won't cost you an arm and a leg. Some iPhone 4 problems, like a smashed screen, won't go away on their own and can't be fixed with a DIY solution.  For those you'll need one of our iPhone 4 repairs.

This article isn't about the services we provide, though.  This is about some of the common iPhone 4 problems you might experience as a new owner of an iPhone 4, and how to fix them (if they even need fixing at all).  Let's start with the most obvious one:

1 - My iPhone 4 Keeps Dropping Calls

The "stupid antenna thing" is possibly the most annoying bug ever accidentally manufactured into a piece of consumer electronics.  It is especially a problem on long calls, as even if you've learnt to "not hold it that way" you will eventually slip and put your finger over the little gap that acts as the antenna.  There are actually three ways to "fix" this, the most infuriating of iPhone 4 problems: Buy a cool iPhone 4 cover so you don't have to worry about touching the antenna, or learn to "not hold it that way" even better.

The third option was discovered a few weeks after the release of the iPhone 4, and is definitely a low-tech solution.  The antenna part that you don't want to cover is at the bottom left of the casing, and is a little gap across the silver part.  The reason you don't want to cover it is because bridging that gap creates a kind of "short circuit" and prevents the antenna from working as it should.  To solve this problem, we turn to the universal adhesive: duct tape.

Simply cut a strip of duct tape as wide as your phone, and place it over the gap.  Your finger will no longer be able to interrupt the signal!  Sure it looks a little DIY and will make your phone sticky, but it didn't cost you a cent and it works as well as any other "solution" that's come out.

2 - The Corners of My iPhone Screen Are Yellow!

Relax, and don't book an iPhone 4 screen replacement just yet!  This issue is caused by the glue used to hold the screen and the body together.  The problem is that sometimes, if they used slightly more glue than they should have, it wouldn't have had time to dry properly before final assembly.  This means that when your iPhone heats up, the glue melts and "bleeds" onto the screen, causing a yellow tint like in the picture below.

So how do you fix it?  The good news is that the yellow stains should clear up on their own as they dry, so there is no need to get an iPhone 4 screen replacement. In fact, if you do, the problem might repeat itself.  Occasionally the stains will leave a residue, in which case you can simply bring it in to our store with your warranty papers and we'll do an iPhone 4 screen replacement for you.

3 - My iPhone 4 is Completely Dead!

Don't panic!  All software crashes sometimes, and it's not always a problem with the hardware that's running it.  Just like when your computer freezes up, sometimes all it needs is a restart, and it's back to running at full efficiency.  Occasionally iPhone 4s do freeze up because of hardware problems.  This will mean you'll need to bring it in to us, or send it to Apple, in order to get the problem fixed.

However, most iPhone 4 freeze issues are simply software problems that can be fixed by doing a hard reset. Simply hold down the home and sleep buttons for around 20 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.  That should be enough to sort most things out, but be aware that you may need to reset some custom settings, as you will have just reset your phone to factory default settings (this does not wipe any data, music or apps).

The video below illustrates how to perform this if you're not sure:

If that doesn't fix the problem, why not give us a call and we'll see what we can do for you.
